What is franchising?

FROM THE OUTSET, IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT FRANCHISING IS. THE BRITISH FRANCHISE ASSOCIATION DEFINE FRANCHISING AS:

BUSINESS FORMAT FRANCHISING IS THE GRANTING OF A LICENSE BY ONE PERSON (THE FRANCHISOR) TO ANOTHER (THE FRANCHISEE), WHICH ENTITLES THE FRANCHISEE TO OWN AND OPERATE THEIR OWN BUSINESS UNDER THE BRAND, SYSTEMS AND PROVEN BUSINESS MODEL OF THE FRANCHISOR.

So what does this mean in practice?

When you sign up as a franchisee, you are licensed – and contractually required – to use the franchisor’s branding, logos, products, website and overall business model, in order to run your business. You are also entitled to further business support, including marketing activity (digital and traditional), product training and the kind of business and moral support you would expect from an invested business partner.

This last point is a big one, and tends to help those who are new to the world of franchising, really understand what’s involved.

Franchising is a joint venture

Franchising is a joint venture between the franchisor and franchisee. One side simply can’t succeed without the other. It’s therefore in the interests of both parties to ensure that the franchisee has absolutely everything they need, on an ongoing basis, to run the franchise as effectively and profitably as possible.

However, it must be understood that whilst any good franchisor will equip and support their franchisees in order to succeed, it’s ultimately in the hands of the franchisee to ensure they run their business in such a way as to ensure their own success.

Franchisees have a huge advantage

As with any type of business, you have all the back office routines and responsibilities to take care of. From setting up and registering as a company, to recruitment and training, admin systems, bookkeeping, tax and all the rest. It’s part and parcel of running any business, and an essential part of any franchise’s existing business skills.

Sounds involved? Perhaps, but franchisees have a huge advantage over anyone starting a business from scratch. They’ll be using a successful business model, selling tried and tested products and be mentored and supported by an established and successful company. Choosing a Tootsie Toes franchise means we are committed to guiding you to your own successful business. That’s the power of franchising!

The business of running a Tootsie Toes franchise

WHILST IT’S TRUE THAT ALL TYPES OF BUSINESS ARE UNIQUE IN SOME WAY, THIS IS ESPECIALLY THE CASE WITH TOOTSIE TOES

Yes, we’re a commercial, profit-driven business like any other, with our business systems, our admin, our suppliers and customers. We make products and sell them. But that’s where the similarities end.

That’s because our business is in creating lifelong mementos of the most special event in most people’s lives – the arrival of a new baby. And in the course of a customer visit, you will be touching and holding your customer’s little treasure.

It therefore follows that the ideal Tootsie Toes franchisee will have a particular passion not only for running a successful business, and not only for crafting beautifully made casts. They will also have an instinctive understanding of what the Tootsie Toes product really means, and a passion to deliver it to perfection, again and again.

It’s this unusual combination of skills – all equally important – which we require in franchisees, and which they require to be successful in this business:

Back office

(business set-up, admin, financials, legals, bookkeeping/tax etc)

Recruitment and personnel

Selling skills

Customer relationship-building

Crafting

We would wish franchisees to be aware from the beginning that we require them to have a good business grounding, or to have formed partnerships with others involved in the Tootsie Toes franchise contract, who do have the necessary skills.

However, the everyday running of the franchise is comprehensively supported by Tootsie Toes. From crafting through to all the Tootsie Toes-related admin, reports and financials, our franchisees get all the support, encouragement and training they’ll need to quickly establish themselves in their designated areas.

It’s true that the franchisee must have the dedication, skills and expertise to set up and run a successful business, however the benefit of being a franchisee is that the responsibility for leadership and ongoing support lies with the franchisor.

That support must manifest itself in the form of practical and ongoing activities which directly contribute to the development and success of the franchise network as a whole, and every individual franchisee in particular, regardless of their geographical location.

So what kind of support can a Tootsie Toes franchisee expect? Quite simply, we are dedicated to the success of our franchisees. We undertake the following activities as part of our ongoing programme of franchisee development:

Training

In addition to the franchisee induction programme, we ensure that all our franchisees are kept fully up to speed on all the developments we make to our processes, procedures and products. We never stand still. If there’s a new or better way to do something, we want to know about it. Then we make sure all our franchisees know too.

New project development

We constantly look for ways to improve our crafting processes, and to develop the products which will give us the edge in the marketplace. To this end we often research and utilise the most advanced and emerging technologies, allowing us to produce the highest possible quality at prices any family could afford.

The cumulative knowledge and experience of the business will increase and deepen with time, therefore providing more insight and know-how to everyone in our network.

A day in the life

IT’S DEFINITELY TRUE WHAT PEOPLE SAY – THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS. BEING YOUR OWN BOSS BRINGS A SENSE OF FULFILMENT AND SATISFACTION THAT YOU JUST DON’T GET IN AN ORDINARY JOB.

Probably the main reason for all that satisfaction is because you’re doing something most people never do -you’re stepping into the world of self-employment, taking control of your life and achieving your ambitions. It’s an amazing act of confidence and commitment.

As you settle into your role as a Tootsie Toes franchisee, you’ll quickly realise that structure plays a key role in your working life. The sheer variety of tasks you need to perform, many of them highly time-sensitive, means that planning, prioritising and effective time management is essential to your success. Everything requires planning. It isn’t going to just somehow work out as you go along. Every day will be carefully planned and thought through.

So how are you supposed to fit everything in? What’s the best way to organise yourself?

Well fortunately, the nature of the business allows you considerable freedom in the way you allocate time to your work.

For example, many people prefer to craft outside business hours when things are quiet and interruptions are fewer. Crafting, which encompasses every aspect of casting and finishing of casts, plus the assembly of framed sets, requires a proper working space, meticulous preparation and focus. So if you’re an early morning person or a bit of a night owl, these quieter hours of the day or evening may suit you perfectly.

The same also seems to be true for your regular back office routines, such as bookkeeping, supplier invoicing, HQ reports and basic admin. The choice is yours. With the proper organisation, you can arrange many of these tasks to suit yourself and your family, as long as your deadlines are met and your promises are kept.

But whichever way you decide to organise yourself, there are certain key tasks which you will definitely need to complete in addition to those mentioned above, every single day. They’re the nuts and bolts of your business:

But whichever way you decide to organise yourself, there are certain key tasks which you will definitely need to complete in addition to those mentioned above, every single day. They’re the nuts and bolts of your business:

Customer appointments

Almost every day, and sometimes more than once a day, you’ll be meeting new and existing customers to take moulds and discuss order requirements. The average time per appointment tends to be around 30-40 minutes excluding travel time, but if you get chatting, you can easily be there much longer. That has to be factored into the list of tasks for the day.

Emails

The company policy regarding answering customer emails and sending customer invoices is very straightforward – do it now. When you consider the huge effort that goes into gaining a customer’s attention, our reply to their interest just can’t wait. All customer emails are answered within minutes. When a customer has decided on an appointment, the confirmation and deposit request is emailed immediately. It helps to clinch the deal, plus it shows a businesslike, professional attitude.

Business development

In addition to the ongoing marketing and social media campaigns we run from HQ, a franchisee’s local area still needs to be developed. That means a comprehensive local marketing strategy needs to be drawn up by the franchisee, then agreed (and supported) by HQ and implemented by the franchisee. Local objectives will be set and opportunities identified. An active participation in the local community is absolutely essential. The more involved you are, the faster people will know your name and want your products.

So there you have a snapshot of an average Tootsie Toes day. If it seems like a lot to read, imagine taking it on, task by task! Imagine the detail, the care, the organisation, the deadlines.

We don’t want to make it sound like it’s all work and no play, but if you’re the right kind of person, you’ll already have realised where the joy lies in amongst all the work.

For the right person, the joy is simply in running your own business. Not just the crafting, but all of it – even the admin! You’re making a huge difference not only to your life, but to the lives of every customer who has received one of your handcrafted Tootsie Toes sets.

You know, they often shed a tear when they first see their new casts. That’s what we call a good day.
